Tea tree is a small tree or shrub with needle-like leaves similar to cypress, and clusters of stalkless yellow or purplish flowers. It originates from Australia and is not cultivated outside Australia. The name is derived from its traditional use by indigenous people as a type of herbal tea.
 
The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation from the leaves or twigs.
 
In aromatherapy, tea tree oil is used for acne, athlete’s foot, burns, diaper rash, dandruff, herpes, insect bites, oily skin, pimples, warts, asthma, bronchitis, mucous membrane inflammation, coughs, sinusitis, cystitis, colds, fever, influenza, infectious diseases, and fungal nail infections.
